Freedom 251 maker Ringing Bells starts refunding money to customers

Freedom 251 maker Ringing Bells starts refunding money to customers

About 30,000 people paid for booking the phones and over 7 crore people registered for it.

Noida-based Ringing Bells, which has promised to sell smartphones for Rs 251 apiece, has started refunding money to customers due to negative speculation around its claim.
"There was a lot of negativity around us so we have decided to take money from customers only after delivering phones to them. We are refunding money to those who have paid for booking the phones and giving them an option of cash on delivery," Ringing Bells Director Mohit Goel told PTI.
About 30,000 people paid for booking the phones and over 7 crore people registered for it. The payment was facilitated by CCAvenue and PayU Biz.
"We don't want customers' money initially. We have investors to back our project. There is a business model to justify the price. We have a foolproof plan and to whomsoever we have disclosed it has agreed to it. I don't want to disclose full details as of now," Goel said.
He said the delivery of Freedom251 smartphones is expected to start in April after which the company will start the second round of bookings.
"Our payment gateway companies CCAvenue and PayU Biz have sought time till Wednesday to credit back the amount in accounts of all those who have paid. After which we will send an email seeking confirmation for cash on delivery," Goel said.
Ringing Bells President Ashok Chaddha had explained earlier that the manufacturing cost of the phone is about Rs 2,500, which will be recovered through a series of measures like economies of scale, innovative marketing, reduction in duties and creating an e-commerce marketplace.
"By going for Made in India components, we can save on the 13.8 per cent duty. Also, we will be selling online first and thus save the costs incurred on large distribution network," he said.
Chaddha also rejected speculations of the handset being subsidised by the government.
"The phone will be manufactured in Noida and Uttaranchal.
Two plants will be set up for Rs 250 crore each with a capacity of 5 lakh phones. The money will come in the form of debt and equity (1.5:1)," he said.
Chaddha said the equity is being met by the promoter family of the company that is "engaged in agri-commodities business" in Uttar Pradesh but declined to give further information.
However, people in industry and some politicians expressed doubt over the claim. Telecom Minister asked the Department of Electronics and IT to look in to matter. Ringing Bells has also come under the scanner of Excise and Income Tax Departments as debates around the feasibility of offering a handset for Rs 251 rages on.
According to the sources, the I-T Department is looking into the financial structure of the company and has obtained documents, including those from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), in this regard.

WhatsApp to cut support to BlackBerry OS, Symbian & Windows Phone 7.1

WhatsApp to cut support to BlackBerry OS, Symbian & Windows Phone 7.1

WhatsApp recently clocked 1 Billion active users globally, which is a huge deal for any messaging service out there right now, considering the fierce competition from Hike, WeChat and Telegram.
In a blog post on 26th February 2016, WhatsApp confirmed that they will be ending support to some old operating systems, as well as some decently prominently ones, by the end of 2016. The ones to get the axe will be BlackBerry OS, including BlackBerry 10, Nokia Symbian S40 and Symbian S60, Android 2.
1 & 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1.
WhatsApp has itself admitted that at the time of their release in 2009, most of the phones operated on BlackBerry OS or Symbian(Nokia), taking about 70% market share. Apple App Store was in a very nascent stage then, and Android was not very popular, both accounting to about 25% sales.
The statistics have now completely reversed, with 99.5% sales coming from the giants, Google, Apple and Microsoft. It seems fair enough that WhatsApp will be ending support to those that do not contribute much to their sales and growth, but what about the existing customers? There are plenty BlackBerry users in this corporate world that will surely get disheartened.
An extract from the blog about the withdrawal of support to these OS' read, "While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future."
I completely understand that BlackBerry and Nokia users are very much less in volumes as compared to other operating systems, but WhatsApp is a very simple tool that does not need much memory on a phone. Even if WhatsApp decides to streamline its processes and focus on important things, they could have left the versions on these OS' as it is.
In any case, it is an indirect method from WhatsApp to make people shift to other OS like iOS, Android and Windows Phone. I could see Apple, Google and Microsoft taking advantage of this in the near future through aggressive advertisements.
Any BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Phone 7.1 users out there wondering what smartphone to upgrade to? Look at our post on budget smartphones, just in case you don't want to spend a lot.

Weird Facts About Leap Year

Weird Facts About Leap Year

We all came to know about the leap year during high school. But there are some weird facts that our schools didn't tell us. In this post, let us discuss about them.

What's a leap year? Well, it is a year in which the month of February comes with one extra day which means there will be a 'Feb 29th' in a leap year. Today, is the leap day and 2016 is a leap year.
The main reason behind adding one additional day is to cover, correct and synchronise the regular calender years with astronomical years. February 29th occurs only once in 4 years. Though every year contains 365 days, an additional day is added as earth takes a bit more than 365 days to orbit the sun.

There are many calenders coming from various countries and cultures. The Hindu calender, Chinese calender, Julian calender, Bengali calender, Roman calender and Hebrew calender are some examples of different calenders that are followed in various parts of the world.
Now, let us discuss a few weird facts.

In some countries, people avoid marriage ceremonies in leap years as they consider the year as bad luck and inauspicious.

There is one person in the recorded history who was born on a leap day and died on a leap day but after living for nearly 68 years. He was the governor of Tasmania
In countries like Taiwan, the leap month is seen as a bad month for aging parents. This is why married daughters generally visit their parents during this month and try to take care of their health.
One person out of every 1400 people is said to be born on a leap day! He or she may need to celebrate their birthday once in four years.
Russians believe that leap years may bring natural calamities, bad weather and deaths.
In countries like Ireland, Feb 29 is a day when women propose men. Yes, this day is known as the Bachelor's Day.

Oscars 2016: Karan Johar's predictions were bang on

Oscars 2016: Karan Johar's predictions were bang on

Filmmaker Karan Johar put out a tweet early yesterday morning which saw him making his own Oscars 2016 predictions. Little did anyone know then that each and every one of his prediction would hit the bull's eye. They were just bang on.
Karan Johar had tweeted:"#spotlight (best film) #Revenant (best director) #LeonardoDiCaprio (best actor) #BrieLarson (best actress) #OscarPredictions."
And he was right on the money. All these four names ended up winning the Oscar in their respective categories for which they were nominated.
( )
Even actor Riteish Deshmukh couldn't control his amusement at seeing the accuracy of these predictions and tweeted to KJO saying, 'You leaked it.' (PHOTOS: Oscars 2016: Leonardo Dicaprio wins his first Oscar for The Revenant)
Well, Karan, we would like to know how you got these four names right.

#Oscars2016: Asif Kapadia who?

#Oscars2016: Asif Kapadia who?

British born filmmaker Asif Kapadia's ode to pop and jazz singer Amy Winehouse just won the best documentary feature at the 88th Academy Awards. Earlier this month, Amy also won a Grammy Award for best music film.
Who's Asif Kapadia? No he isn't Indian. Kapadia was born in London to his parents who were from Pakistan. But he does have a bit of an Indian connect that may have slipped under the radar of popular culture.
In 2001 Kapadia directed his first full length feature film called The Warrior, shot against the Himalayas and the deserts of Rajasthan, about Lafcadia, a warrior in feudal Rajasthan.
And Irrfan Khan played Lafcadia. In 2003, it was selected as UK's entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film - first time it submitted an entry that wasn't in a tongue indigenous to the country. It was rejected on the same grounds by the Academy - Hindi was not indigenous to Britain.
This isn't the first time Kapadia's made a feature around a personality though. 2010 saw the release of Senna - Kapadia's biopic on the world famous Brazilian motor-racing champion Ayrton Senna. It became one of the highest grossing British documentaries of all time.
Growing up though, Kapadia thought films were boring. In a 2011 interview to Guardian, he says: "As a kid, I thought movies were boring. My parents would hire VHS recorders for the weekend and watch Bollywood movies. I'd get bored and go out to Stoke Newington common to play football. The movies they took me to - Grease, ET - never really appealed."
Thank god he developed an interest, then. And Kapadia cites Vietnamese filmmaker Tran Anh Hung's 1995 film Cyclo as a key contributor to his sensibility, as also the work of French director Robert Bresson.
Kapadia's next? Supposedly a romanctic story of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian girl set in the early 20s called Ali and Nino, scheduled for a release sometime in 2016.

Subramanian Swamy urges govt to file contempt petition against P Chidambaram

Subramanian Swamy urges govt to file contempt petition against P Chidambaram

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday suggested the Centre to file a contempt petition against former Home Minister P Chidambaram for allegedly filing a wrong affidavit in the Ishrat Jahan case.
"I will request the Centre to file a contempt petition against Chidambaram. If it does not file it, I will do so," Swamy told reporters.
Citing the then home secretary G K Pillai, Swami said as Home Minister in 2009, Chidambaram had got the Centre's affidavit changed in the Ishrat Jahan case to drop any reference to her Lashkar-e-Taiba links.
"If Chidambaram says he had got the affidavit changed on the directions of Sonia Gandhi, she can also be made a co-accused," he said.
On daily hearing of Ayodhya Ram Temple case, Swamy said he had spoken to All India Muslim Personal Law Board's Shahabuddin Ansari and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and they are ready for it.
"If it is started, hearing will be completed within a month and decision would come. I hope the Supreme Court will go by the Allabahad High Court decision. Former PM Narsimha Rao had given an affidavit that if it is proved there was temple on the disputed site, it would be given to Hindus," Swamy said.
He also praised HRD Minister Smriti Irani's speech in Parliament and said she was being criticised for the "good speech".
Reiterating his demand for renaming JNU after Subhas Chandra Bose, Swamy said the university should be closed for four months after examinations.
